Advent: Peace

Today is the second Sunday of Advent, and the topic to focus on is peace.

Now, I'm sure that everyone reading this could use some peace in their life. Whether you need peace from relational conflict, peace from business of life, peace from stress and pressure of work, peace from anxieties or fears. We could all use a little, or a lot, of peace.

Good news! God is a God of peace.

"For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." -- Isaiah‬ ‭9:6‬

Thousands of years ago Isaiah prophesied the coming Messiah, and one of His titles is Prince of Peace. He is, not only the bringer of peace, but He rules over it.

When we think of peace, we tend to think of calm and quiet, passive, babbling creeks and birds softly chirping, but when we read about peace in the Bible we see a different picture.

In ‭‭Philippians‬ ‭4:7‬ ‭we see, "And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

A guard is not a passive bunny rabbit. A guard is trained and armed. Think of security officers at Walmart or any other big store. They have guns and batons and mace and handcuffs. They are, in many ways, scary and intimidating, but, they are effective, they keep everything around them safe and calm.

Peace is not passivity, but it is protection, and the Prince of Peace is the ultimate protector.

At the first Christmas, some 2000 ‭‭years ago, angels declared, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!” -- Luke‬ ‭2:14‬

Today, if you need peace, if you need protection from the chaos of this life, it is available, and it is found in a Prince, God, who was born as a human to bring peace and protection to those who will accept it.

Have you accepted the Prince of Peace?
